The culm sheath margins on it are red and the new shoots are very colourful. The culm wood is tough and splits well. It tolerates alkaline soil and strong winds. It’s somewhat drought tolerant and is suitable for dry climates. It’s good for landscaping, shoots, culm wood and paper pulp.
